‘Do this to fix your back pain’ or so they claim...

If you use social media or watch television, you would’ve been bombarded with many things that are purported to ‘fix’ back pain: these range from massage tools, posture correctors and ergonomic mattresses to that one magic exercise you supposedly need to do.

You might then go and buy that brace or try that stretch for a couple weeks and your pain improves… But was it that one specific thing you tried that helped?

What’s interesting about the nature of back pain is that most episodes tend to improve over time ‘without’ treatment. Therefore, if you try anything at the right time, it can appear effective. In other words, your pain could have mostly improved ‘despite’ what you did rather than ‘because of’ what you did.

While quick fixes promoted in the media often sound plausible, they may not be supported by strong research – or any research – and may only provide short-term relief at best.

So, the next time you read or hear about a silver bullet for back pain, hold up your sceptic shield.
